After what seemed to me like an eternity, we were back on the road with only a few short miles to go. As we skidded into the barnyard, Dad was already in rare form, screaming in his best military-command voice long before I shut off the engine.

I can only imagine the reaction today (or the phone call made) by a pharmacist asked by two 10-12 year-old boys to supply materials to concoct an explosive. Today, as I note the now omnipresent child restraints, bicycle helmets and other paraphernalia that my kids, and now grandkids, are subjected to, I think, “I’m glad that I lived when I did.”

Social media, as it exists today, can be a dangerously divisive force among us at all levels. It is a medium that soothes us with what we want to hear, and inflames us with what we don’t. It provides positive reinforcement for what we believe is true, and positive reinforcement for what we believe is false. The most ironic aspect is that this was created to be an ultra-efficient form of commercial advertising.

I suppose with our astounding and rapidly progressing technology, it was bound to happen. With all the amazing things that computers are capable of doing, creative thinking is finding new, unforeseen problems to solve and create, as well as investment opportunities.

The political furor of the 1930s led to cataclysmic consequences, of course, and there’s little reason to think that’s where things are heading today. Still, the similarities are close enough to suggest that nobody should be surprised when a sustained period of economic anxiety and anger leads to flirtation with unorthodox, radical, political experiments.

Both major parties have held the presidency and enjoyed majorities in the Congress, but have totally failed to even moderately address the problems continually cited by their candidates. Regardless of the severity that we perceive of the country’s problems, shouldn’t we be smart enough by now to realize that they will not be improved, much less eliminated by politicians?

Six months ago, if someone had offered a wager that in late August the two leading presidential candidates would be Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders, I would have probably borrowed heavily to bet against it.

Our national politics has become a reality TV series of its own that tops any stunts the producers of “Survivor” can deliver. Consider the current Republic Party presidential nomination, known worldwide as hashtagGOPClownCar, and its fascination. Like watching a 17-moose herd on roller skates, you just cannot look away.

The most glaring irony is that former U.S. Sen. and GOP presidential candidate Fred Thompson, a professed small government conservative, is pushing a product that is subject to the good faith and credit of the United States government.

The newly-proposed $72.3 billion state budget promises more of the same; cutting the state income tax rate while increasing and broadening the sales tax, and with higher taxes on such things as cigarettes, oil drillers and used car trade-ins.
