Without any doubt, Greg and I are creatures of habit. We start our day, every day, at the dining table with a bowl of cereal and cup of coffee. Only once the breakfast dishes are done, do we head outside to do the animal chores, feeding and watering the pigeons, chickens, goats and horses.

When I first stepped outside into the gray morning, I did not go far. I paused. I felt as though I might lose my balance if I was not careful.

Perhaps you recall this past summer when I wrote about our homing pigeons adopting an errant cardinal nest.

The weather may be cold, and the skies more gray than blue, but I am so thankful for the winter trees and their gentle reminders of my life’s stories.

I know that I have written about oatmeal before. It runs deeply through my life. I believe without any doubt, that there is nothing in the world quite like a piping hot bowl of oatmeal cereal on a cold winter morning.

As I walked down the log stairs to put the kettle on the stove, I could see that even though the sky outside was overcast, there was still a diffuse brightness flooding the creek valley.

The seed catalogs have already begun to arrive in the mail, even though the new year has not yet dawned and spring is still months away, but as I leaf through the brightly colored pages, I am once again filled with a wonderful feeling of excited anticipation.

When our creek valley world was dressed in white and I walked across the upper field, leaving footprints as I passed, I remembered back to a city snowfall, long ago, when I was a child.

Living off the grid these past 14 years has been a wonderful adventure, but I feel as though it certainly took a while before I felt totally and completely at home. Now, I could not imagine any other life, but as I think back, it occurs to me that it has always taken me a while to hit my stride.

This year’s first hard frost brought me back to a morning several years ago. I remembered that it was still quite dark out that morning, when I put the coffee water on the stove to boil. When I leaned forward to peer through the kitchen window, as the cold night turned into a chilled gray day, I was glad to be warmly surrounded by the beautiful wooden logs of our home.
