Sandra Kay (Guthrie) Downing, 74, of Amelia, passed away at her home with her loving husband of 37 years, Doug Downing, by her side on Monday, May 3, 2021 after a battle with CNS Lymphoma.

She was born on July 17, 1946, in Dayton, the daughter of the late Ralph and Marjorie Burgess Guthrie.

Sandra was an amazing lady who enjoyed traveling and meeting other people. She knew no strangers. She also had a soft spot in her heart for any animal that needed care and would often take them to raise for a better life.

Sandra attended Concord Local School and graduated from Whiteoak High School in the class of 1964. She worked for many years at General Motors and its divisions, having retired from there. After retirement, she worked at her “dream job,” creating for the Workshops of David T. Smith where she made many beautiful creations of original pottery.

Sandra was a talented artist who shared her gifts with many over the years, from ceramic dolls to painting a life-size Jesus on the wall of her church nursery. She would provide for those with hardships and would take care of them before her own needs were met. Her husband described her best when he stated she had a “gentle heart” that she extended to all around her. Her love of animals and generosity to others could not be equaled, and she was giving in so many ways.

Sandra's family include: her husband, Doug Downing; her daughter, Michelle (Bryan) Gropengieser Fricke; her son, Kie Tyler; two great-grandchildren; siblings, Terence (Sandra) Guthrie, Carla (James) Surber and Lisa (Jim) Mitchell; her sister-in-law, Nedra Garman Guthrie of Las Vegas; nieces and nephews, Jennifer (Walter) Hashimoto, Daniel (Kelly) Guthrie, Geoffrey (Jessie) Surber, Christopher (Amy) Guthrie, Kyle (Hope) Guthrie, Susan (Stephen) Wojcicki and Gregory Surber; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, James Edward Guthrie.

Contributions may be given in her memory to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

A memorial service will be held at a later time to be announced. Those wishing to leave condolences may do so on her Facebook Page under Sandy Downing.
