June Eleanor (Peck) Bowman, of Wilmington, formerly of Hillsboro, passed away Friday, July 16, 2021.

She was born June 17, 1929, at home near New Holland, the daughter of the late Paul and Ellen (Tarbill) Peck.

June graduated from Atlanta, Ohio High School in May 1947. She followed her dream of becoming a nurse and graduated from The Ohio State University with a bachelor of science in nursing in December 1951.

Upon completion of her nursing degree, June worked for almost three years at the Columbus Ohio Department of Health. After moving to Highland County and while raising four little boys, June worked at the Highland County Department of Health part-time. In 1968, June was employed by the Hillsboro Board of Education to set up the school nurse program. She retired from that job in 1991.

June was very active in the Hillsboro United Methodist Church in the choir, the Friendly Helpers Circle and United Methodist Women, serving as president for a three-year term. Also, she was an associate member of the United Community Church in Sun City, Fla., and she sang before Handel’s Messiah under the direction of Miss Mary Muntz. Her love of family and grandchildren and great-grandchildren was most important to her and her husband.

Her many community activities included Delta Kappa Gamma, where she served as president for a two-year term; former member of the board and past president of the Highland County Crippled Children and Adults; former member of the Sweet Adelines of Highland County; member of the Highland County Retired Teachers Association and a member of the Hillsboro Women’s Club.  

June married Richard Spencer Bowman of Orrville, Ohio on Sept. 24, 1950.

She is survived by two sons, Steven (Eileen) Bowman of Wilmington and Mark (Carol) Bowman of Mason; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Huff, Jena Slosberg, Jessica Bowman, Sarah Bowman, David Richard (Dana) Bowman, Richard Stuart Bowman and Andrew Bowman; five great-grandchildren, Hayley, Hayden, Marin, Elliott and Declan; one brother, Robert Peck of New Holland; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Richard Spencer Bowman, on Feb. 25, 2016; two sons, Robert and David Bowman; and one brother, John Peck.  

Visitation will be held Thursday, July 22, 2021 from noon until 1 p.m. at the Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Dr. Derek Russell will officiate. Funeral service will take place following visitation at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Hillsboro Cemetery.
