Local Catholic radio station WLRU 106.9 is set for its on-air debut in time for the holidays.

The station will launch Dec. 23 with Christmas music, followed by the broadcast of all special holiday Mass services, according to Father Mike Paraniuk, pastor of St. Mary Catholic Church of Hillsboro and St. Benignus Catholic Church of Greenfield.

As previously reported in The Highland County Press, St. Mary Catholic Church made local and regional history on June 6 by becoming the first Highland County nonprofit organization and the first church of the more than 200 parishes in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati to be granted permission to build a radio station.

On Dec. 24, a Children's Mass will be held at 3:30 p.m., followed by Midnight Mass at 10:30 p.m. The Christmas Day Mass will begin at 9 a.m. Dec. 25.

After the holidays are over, the station will begin streaming Christian programming from the Catholic TV network. Paraniuk said they hope to offer local and national news as well.

Paraniuk said that he and his crew conducted signal checks last month and that the listening area is double what they originally anticipated. Instead of a 10-mile radius, the station reaches 20 miles in each direction, including Wilmington, Seaman and Lynchburg. Parishioners of St. Benignus should be able to tune into the station without any problems, according to Paraniuk.

"We will be covering the whole county and then some," Paraniuk said.
