Ohio National Guard security detail after Jan. 6 cost state $1 million

Ohio Capital Journal

It cost the state of Ohio more than $1 million to send hundreds of troops to the Ohio Statehouse last month to protect against acts of political violence.
All told, taxpayers spent millions of dollars to pay for enhanced security in Columbus and Washington, D.C. following the Jan. 6 events at the U.S. Capitol.
After the deadly insurrection at the nation’s capital, DeWine mobilized around 1,000 troops to D.C. to help with security for President Joe Biden’s inauguration. DeWine also authorized 480 troops to be stationed at the Ohio Statehouse during planned protests on inauguration week.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol, normally in charge of protecting the Statehouse grounds, also ramped up security last month.
The cost of stationing troops in Columbus, as approved by the Ohio Controlling Board on Monday, was $1,035,000. Most of this amount ($695,000) went to payroll, with the remainder spent on food, travel costs and other supplies.
The price of extra highway patrol security at the Statehouse was more than $2.4 million, The Associated Press recently reported.
The deployment of Ohio troops in D.C. cost more than $2.1 million, but this is paid for by the federal government, according to Stephanie Beougher, the public information officer for the Ohio National Guard.
Public officials had worried about the potential for violence as online extremists turned their attention from the U.S. Capitol to the 50 state capitals. The Ohio Statehouse and other government buildings in downtown Columbus were closed for four days.
In spite of — or perhaps because of — the immense show of force, there were no reported incidents of violence in Columbus. Law enforcement officers outnumbered a small gathering of armed protesters, who stayed only for a few hours before escaping the frigid weather.
Protesters caused more than $150,000 in damage at the Statehouse last May and more than $1 million in damage to nearby businesses and offices. In response, the governor deployed Ohio National Guard troops to Columbus and Cleveland at an eventual cost of $3.2 million.
A Republican state senator recently proposed a bill to install security cameras at the Statehouse and increase the penalties for arson and vandalism.

Thank you, publisher. I don't know if my punctuation air (Haha) was a result of my phone's auto-fill feature or my neglect. Either way, I didn't proofread my comments before submitting.

Haha! The G Man! The written English language has it's quirks and anomalies. Some of the common errors just catch my eye for what ever reason. Some of the sentences I post would have my English Composition professor hold me after class.... ••••Publisher's note: By the way, G Man, "The written English language has it's quirks" should be its, a neuter pronoun, and not "it's," a contraction for it is or it has. No apostrophe needed in your usage of its. Future lessons cost extra.

Matthew, aka G man, no problem with keeping me in check since I am a fan of your posts . Retirement may have my brain on standby mode more often than it should be.

Haha! I was a little curious. The building where the Ohio legislators meet is actually called the Ohio Statehouse, the capitol (small "c") building for Ohio. And to David's point on weapons at the Statehouse. Me personally, I have no desire to open carry a firearm at the capitol building in Columbus.

Publisher- I just notice a few things occasionally with spelling and punctuation. I'm not a stickler and I'm not a English teacher. There's always the "your", "you're", and "there", "they're" mistakes which is easily accepted by a casual reader. I'm guilty of oversights, hastily written comments, not proofreading, typos, and relying on auto-correct. My only pet peeve for incorrect punctuation is when referring to a Marine, as in a United States Marine, please, please capitalize "Marine." ••••• Publisher's note: We do our best to capitalize Marine and lower case "ranking members" in Congress. The former is a proper noun, the latter is not. I wish staff writers for congressmen and congresswomen would learn the basics. It would save our staff a lot of time correcting their many errors. Of course, I suspect those staff writers often take their orders from egotistical and opulent members. (Those "brave and noble" 535.)

David, I'm just giving you a hard time. But the State Capital (a) is Columbus. The building that holds the General Assembly is the Capitol (o). Many people have been getting that wrong recently. I'll use another example in a sentence. When Ashlee Babbitt was killed at the January 6th riots, trespassing at the Capitol should not be a capital crime. ••••Publisher's note: Thank you, Mr. Grammar Man!

There are certain places where a CCW is prohibited and open carry should be. The State Capital should be one. Matthew, sadly we have a double standard.

Why is it that the media calls Antifa and BLM violence during demonstrations "mostly peaceful"? But when a handful of over-zealous, mostly Trump supporting, unorganized protestors cause a riot at the Capitol, It's called an "insurrection."? I would think an insurrection is an organized, armed operation. That involves more than waving flags and wearing buffalo skins. The January 6th riot is more akin to the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party (not in principle, just in level of violence and mischief). What do you call what leftist protestors did in Portland and Seattle? Then in Kenosha, Wisconsin. There was a lot of government overreach last year. Starting with a heavy-handed lockdown of states and cities. Schools and businesses were closed. This caused many in our country to become uneasy and prone to act out. Then Cuomo's severely botched policies for the elderly in New York. The political leaders caused this tension. Many did it to pile on President Trump. To make him the scapegoat, so he would lose the election. Well, they got what they wanted. Are we better off now than a year ago? Nope. Thanks to RINOs, the news media, and Democrat leaders.
