A Hillsboro man was arraigned in Hillsboro Municipal Court Tuesday, Sept. 11 on a sexual battery charge from an alleged incident eight years ago and on a sexual imposition charge from an alleged incident last summer.

Steven Holland, 39, of Hillsboro, has been charged with sexual battery, a third-degree felony, and sexual imposition, a third-degree misdemeanor. He had been teaching at Hillsboro High School.

According to the affidavit filed by Highland County Sheriff’s Deputy Vincent Antinore, a 25-year-old female told the sheriff’s office this week that “beginning in the summer of 2008,” Holland allegedly touched her inappropriately.

She alleges that the incident occurred in September 2010, when she was 17.

The sexual battery charge stems from a separate investigation.

A 15-year-old female also reported to the sheriff’s office last week that Holland “began touching her inappropriately” in an incident in the summer of 2017.

McKenna told Holland that if convicted of either charge, Holland would be required to register as a sex offender. The felony charge would also include up to a three-year prison sentence, while the misdemeanor charge would carry a sentence of up to 60 days in jail.

Pretrial hearings for both cases have been scheduled for Sept. 18.

“Although the sexual imposition and battery were allegedly almost seven years apart, they involve the same officer and somewhat related circumstances,” McKenna said.

McKenna entered a not guilty plea on Holland’s behalf and placed Holland under a $20,000 bond. Holland has posted bond, according to Highland County Sheriff Donnie Barrera.

Hillsboro City Schools Superintendent Tim Davis told The Highland County Press Tuesday, Sept. 11 that Holland has been placed on administrative leave until further notice.
