One year following an abbreviated fair due to COVID-19, the Highland County Agricultural Society is prepared to host a full slate of events for the 2021 Highland County Fair.

This year’s fair is set for Sunday, Sept. 5 through Saturday, Sept. 11. Gates will open at 8 a.m. daily, and rides are in operation starting at 1 p.m. Admission includes $30 for exhibitors and/or season tickets; $30 for membership tickets; and $10 for general admission ride tickets. Ride tickets with passes are $7.

The Junior Fair exhibitors will begin setting up and weighing in animals on Saturday, Sept. 4. The schedule includes hog arrival and weigh-in, 7-11 a.m.; FCCLA projects must be in place, 9 a.m.-noon; horse arrival, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; Junior Fair Building project arrival/booth setup, 10 a.m.- 8 p.m.; beef, sheep and goats arrival, 1-5 p.m. and weigh-in at 6 p.m.; rabbit arrival, 4-8 p.m.; and non-lactating dairy arrival, 7-10 p.m.

The fair will begin with an opening ceremony Sunday, Sept. 5 at 8 a.m. The opening day also includes the annual Junior Fair Queen/King Contest, which will be held in the Multipurpose Show Arena beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Other events for Sunday include:

• Senior Fair schedule: Dairy Goat Show and Open Class Rabbit Show, 8 a.m.; Church Service (Multi-Purpose Building) and Antique Tractor Pulls, 9 a.m.; Fine Arts and Photography Showtime, 3 p.m.; Rodeo and Vegetables & Fruit Judging, followed by Farm Products Judging, 4 p.m.; Pee Wee Feeder Calf Showmanship, 5:30 p.m.; Open Class Feeder Calf Show, 6 p.m.; and COTPC Truck Pulls, 7 p.m.

• Junior Fair schedule: Jr. Fair Farm Shop, Crop, Vegetable, Flower Still Projects and Photography Judged, 11 a.m.; Dairy Arrival, noon-4 p.m.; Horse Skillathon, 1-3 p.m.; Market Chicken Arrival and Weighing, 2-6 p.m.; Poultry Exhibition Arrival, 6-8 p.m.; and FCS/4-H Style Revue, 7 p.m.

On Monday, Sept. 6, senior citizens and veterans are admitted free. Also on Sept. 6, the first 300 kids ages 4-12 entering after 1 p.m. will receive free admission and rides, and the first 100 kids under age 3 will receive a coupon for free rides, courtesy of Adena.

• Senior Fair schedule: Goat PeeWee Showmanship, 8:30 a.m.; Dahlia Show, 11 a.m.; Motocross, 11:30 a.m.; Culinary Arts Judging, noon; ATV Races, 5 p.m.; Culinary Auction & Sale (at Grange Building), 6:30 p.m.; Pedal Tractor Pull, 7 p.m.; and Sheep Lead Contest, 7:30 p.m.

• Junior Fair schedule: Horse Show, Goat Show, Rabbit Breed ID Contest and Egg & Poultry Judging Contest, 9 a.m.; Dog Obedience Show, Rally, You and Your Dog, 9:30 a.m.; Dairy Skillathon, 10 a.m; Jr. Fair Sewing Challenge, 11 a.m.; Jr. Fair Awards, 2 p.m.; Swine Showmanship, 4 p.m.; and Avian Bowl, 5 p.m.

On Tuesday, Sept. 7, the Hall of Fame ceremony will take place, while there is a busy schedule on the Junior Fair side with rabbit, poultry and beef showmanship and market barrow, horse and goats shows.

Highlights for Tuesday include:

• Senior Fair schedule: Poultry Show and Fruit Cobbler Contest, 1 p.m.; Hall of Fame, 6:30 p.m.; AutoCross, 7 p.m.

• Junior Fair schedule: Rabbit Showmanship followed by Single Fryer Market Rabbits, Poultry Showmanship & Exhibition followed by Open Exhibition, and Market Barrow Show, 8 a.m.; 4-H Commodity Carnival, noon; Beef Showmanship, County Bred and Born Feeders, Country Bred and Born Market Beef and Cloverbud Activity, 2 p.m.; High Point Horse Show, 5 p.m.; Breeding Boer Goat & Market Goat Show, 5:30 p.m.

The evening of Wednesday, Sept. 8 will include a country music concert featuring Sam L. Smith in the Multi-Purpose Building, as well as a Demolition Derby. Both events begin at 7 p.m. The first sale will also be held, as the Junior Fair Hog Sale begins at 5:30 p.m.

• Junior Fair schedule: Poultry Meat Pen Show and Rabbit Breeding Show, 8 a.m.; Dog Showmanship, Ranch Horse, Calf Roping, Gymkhana and Sheep Showmanship, 9 a.m.; Dairy Show, 9:30 a.m.; Cloverbud Activity, 10 a.m.; Dog Skillathon, 10:30 a.m.; PeeWee Sheep Showmanship, 11:30 a.m.; Jr. Fair Nutrition Bowl Contest, 3:30 p.m.

Thursday, Sept. 9 will include another concert, this time a gospel show featuring Sold Out beginning at 7 p.m. There will also be a tractor/truck pull at the same time. For the Junior Fair sales, the Poultry Meat Pen Sale and Single Fryer Rabbit Sale will begin at noon.

Thursday’s events also include:

• Senior Fair schedule: Tug Pull, 8:30 a.m.; Needlework & Crafts Entry, 2-8 p.m.

• Junior Fair schedule: Jr. Fair Baking Contest, 9 a.m.; Horse Extreme Challenge, 11 a.m.; Sheep Show, noon; Fun Horse Show, 1 p.m.; Beef Show, 4 p.m.

The annual Highland County Fair Talent Show will begin Friday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. in the multipurpose building with opening rounds. Performances will include singing, dancing or performing a musical instrument, and this year’s winner will receive a $1,000 prize (with prizes for the top five finalists). The Showman of Showmen competition kicks off at 2 p.m. for Junior Fair exhibitors. Friday evening also will be a busy sale night with dairy, goats, steers, feeders and lambs sales beginning at 5:30 p.m. for the Junior Fair.

Also on Friday, other events are as follows:

• Senior Fair schedule: Dairy Cattle Show, 9 a.m.; Adult Sheep Showmanship Fundraiser, 10 a.m.; PeeWee Rabbit Showmanship, noon; Garden Club Flower Judging, 1 p.m.; Open Western Horse Show, 6 p.m.; Tractor Pull, 7 p.m.

• Junior Fair schedule: General Livestock Judging Contest and Jr. Fair Tractor Rodeo, 9 a.m.; Jr. Fair Demonstration Contest and Dairy Released following Open Class Dairy Show, noon; Horses Released after Western Show, approximately 3 p.m.

The final full day of the fair is Saturday, Sept. 11, with a major highlight being the Cheer Spectacular at 5 p.m., followed by the Talent Show finals starting at 6 p.m.

• Junior Fair schedule: Barnyard Olympics, noon; Open market Hog Show, 1 p.m.; and Jr. Fair Building Release, 3-5 p.m.

On Sunday, Sept. 12, Senior Fair photography/fine arts pickup will be held noon-2 p.m. All Junior Fair projects will be released 10 a.m.-noon.
