Highland County Community Action Organization offers free assistance in tax preparation service through the Ohio Benefit Bank.

The staff will be available at the 1487 North High Street Suite 500 Hillsboro every Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Some restrictions may apply, contact for more information or to make an appointment, please call (937) 393-3458.

The agency is also a Certified Application Counselor Designated Organization and employs 5 staff members that are Certified Application Counselors.

With open enrollment ending on Feb. 15 to obtain insurance through the Marketplace, these staff members are available to answer questions and help residents navigate through the healthcare Marketplace (healthcare.gov) and obtain insurance as mandated by the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

The staff has assisted a number of area residents with applications for health insurance either through the Marketplace or Medicaid. Under the ACA, individuals who can afford health insurance but do not have insurance that qualifies as minimum essential coverage will have to pay a penalty.

The penalty for 2014 is $95 for an adult, $47.50 for a child, up to $285 for a family, or 1 percent of family income, whichever is greater. In 2015 and 2016, the penalties will increase.
