Bright Local School District Superintendent Ted C. Downing passed away Sunday, Sept. 15.

He was 67.

The Bright Local Board of Education selected Mr. Downing as superintendent in August 2015.

Prior to being named Bright Local superintendent, Mr. Downing served as the superintendent of Bridgeport Exempted Village Schools for six years. He also served as the high school principal at Eastern Brown Local Schools for 18 years. He was the assistant high school principal, athletic director and a teacher at Greenfield Exempted Village Schools for 17 years. Mr. Downing had also served as an adjunct professor for Southern State Community College.

"Ted Downing will be greatly missed at Bright Local Schools, not only as a superintendent but also as my friend," BLSD Board of Education President Angela Wright said.

"Ted is responsible in getting our district back on the right track. Ted loved what he did. He loved being involved with all aspects of our district," Wright said. "He has done many things to be proud of.

"I – and our district – will miss Ted dearly."

"Not only did Ted do a wonderful job taking care of our district, but he also was great at empathizing with people," BLSD Board member John Gillespie said. "He knew what students needed a kind word to help them through a rough patch or to just let them know they had a friend. Ted worked tirelessly to improve the lives of the students, teachers and administrators of Bright Local. I was blessed to have him as a friend."

During the Monday, Sept. 16 Hillsboro City Schools' Board of Education meeting, HCS Superintendent Tim Davis expressed condolences to the Bright Local School District and to the family of Mr. Downing.

Highland County Press
publisher Rory Ryan said he has considered Mr. Downing a friend since their first meeting more than 29 years ago.

"Ted and I met at McClain High School when he was the director of athletics and I was just starting in the newspaper business," Ryan said. "Ted was always generous with his time and became a great resource for background information on countless stories over the years.

"Ted and I spoke just before the start of the school year, and he was really looking forward to great things happening at Bright Local. I will miss our conversations, and extend sincere condolences to the family."

Mr. Downing is survived by his wife, Jill, and their children and grandchildren.

According to the district, a visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19 with a funeral service at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 20. Both will be held at Whiteoak High School in Mowrystown.
