Good Agricultural Practices

GAP stands for Good Agricultural Practices, but that does not mean for any specific crop or enterprise. In fact, there is GAP training for multiple things in agriculture. We have been doing GAP training for tobacco producers for a few years now and will again in the coming months. However, there is another GAP training that may be of interest in the next week.

This comes from Campbell County, Ky. The date is this coming Monday, Feb. 20. This is for fruits and vegetables, as you can read below. The tobacco GAP training dates are in the next section: GAP Training: Good Agriculture Practices Class, Monday, Feb. 20 9 a.m.-noon taught at Campbell County Extension Service, 3500 Alexandria Pike, Highland Heights, Ky. 41076; call to register: 859.572.2600

Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) is a set of production guidelines designed to reduce the likelihood of microbial or other contamination of fresh fruits and vegetables. Producers will learn the best practices that will reduce the risk of their product becoming contaminated. Upon completion of this class, the farmer receives a GAP Training Certificate issued by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture.

The certificate is a component of the requirements to allow raw product samples at Kentucky farmers’ markets and Kentucky Farm Bureau Certified Roadside Markets.

This class will be taught by Sarah Stolz, an extension agent specializing in horticulture for the Campbell Cooperative Extension Office.

For more information and to register, contact Sarah at sarah.stolz@uky.edu or (859) 572-2600, and remember class size is limited. Registration required.
