Scioto County Sheriff Marty V. Donini announced that on Thursday, March 14, the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office received a call from an individual stating they believed they had found human remains in a field located on state Route 522 in Wheelersburg.

Sheriff’s deputies and detectives responded, along with Portsmouth police detectives and an agent from Ohio BCI&I, to investigate. The remains were located in a wooded area next to a field alongside state Route 522.

Captain John W. Murphy said Tuesday the remains are that of Rebecca Lee Kerns, 26, who was reported missing to the Portsmouth Police Department in October 2018. The Sheriff’s Office received confirmation on the identification from the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office.

On Monday, March 18, detectives from the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office and the Portsmouth Police Department notified Kerns’ next of kin. This case will now be a joint investigation between the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office and the Portsmouth police. The investigation will now focus on how Kerns’ body ended up off SR 522 and what the cause of death was.

Murphy encourages anyone with information to contact Detective Adam T. Giles at (740) 354-7316. All information will be kept confidential and anonymous.
