County hears update on broadband Internet services
Highland County Commissioners Tom Horst, Shane Wilkin and Gary Heaton met with Randy Drewyor of Horizon Communications this week for a review of southern Ohio broadband services. Horizon was recently awarded $66.4 million to extend broadband networking in 34 Ohio counties, including Highland.

U.S. Chamber of Commerce endorses Rob Portman for U.S. Senate
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce today endorsed Rob Portman for U.S. Senate. “We’re endorsing Rob Portman because he will stand up for the people of Ohio in order to create jobs during these tough economic times,” said Bill Miller, the U.S. Chamber’s senior vice president and political director.

Community reflects on anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001
There will be a Sept. 11, 2001 ninth anniversary commemoration at noon Saturday, Sept. 11 on the Highland County Courthouse lawn. Shane Montgomery, pastor of the Grace Bible Church in Hillsboro, is the county coordinator, in conjunction with the Awakening America Alliance.

The Highland County Republican Party picnic was held Aug. 29 at the Hillsboro VFW Post 9094. Featured speakers included Rep. Dave Daniels, a candidate for the Ohio 17th Senate District race, and Cliff Rosenberger, a candidate for Ohio's 86th House District.

State jobless rate down slightly in July
Ohio's unemployment rate was 10.3 percent in July, down slightly from 10.5 percent in June, according to data released by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. Ohio's nonfarm wage and salary employment increased 1,800 over the month, from the revised 5,045,000 in June to 5,046,800 in July.

Earzlink Hearing Care opens Hillsboro office
Although Earzlink Hearing Care has already been serving the hearing needs of Highland County residents since late July, they have chosen to delay their announcement of their grand opening in order to offer a number special events and activities. Earzlink Hearing Care is located at 934 West Main Street in Hillsboro.

2011 budget projections please county
Commissioners said this week they are pleased with the initial departmental budgets presented for 2011. During a budget review hearing on Wednesday, Aug. 11 with Highland County Auditor Bill Fawley, commissioners Shane Wilkin, Tom Horst and Gary Heaton expressed appreciation to department heads for keeping next year’s budget close to the 2010 numbers. “The requests came in very much in line with what they were this year,” Fawley said. “There are some increases, but nothing major."
