The Whiteoak Wildcats gained their first win of the season on Thursday night, defeating the Clermont Northeastern Rockets, 59-45 at the CNE Holiday Tournament.
WHS outscored the Rockets, 14-10 in the first quarter with Traeten Hamilton, Stephen Ross and Trever Yeager contributing to the 14-point quarter, including Yeager sinking a 3-pointer.
The Wildcats continued their momentum with a very strong second quarter by outscoring CNE, 18-11 with them making three 3-pointers in the frame. In the second, Yeager sank two 3-pointers, and Atlee Carr had one trey in the same frame.
With their two strong quarters, the Wildcats led CNE, 32-21 at halftime.
The second half saw WHS score 18 points in the third and nine more points in the fourth, while the Rockets scored 11 points in the third and 13 points in the fourth.
"Trever Yeager and Traeten Hamilton played very well offensively for us," WHS head coach Jeremy McGraw said. "We passed the ball extremely well (Thursday) as a team and put four quarters together.
"That is where we have struggled up to this point. I'm proud of this win for our guys. They deserved it."
For the game, WHS was led by both Hamilton and Yeager with 18 points each, with Yeager finishing with three 3-pointers, two two-point baskets and going 3-of-5 from the free-throw line.
Hamilton finished with seven two-point field goals and was 4-of-7 from the free-throw line.
Also for WHS, Ross totaled six points, while Hunter Ruckel totaled five points. Michael Crowe finished with three points, as did Carr. Scoring two points each for the Wildcats were Charley Skinner, Derrick Ison and Evan Brill.
WHS will play in the finals of the CNE Holiday Tournament on Friday at 7:30 p.m. against the Batavia Bulldogs.
