Despite a solid 15-point effort by Jarron Cumberland, the University of Cincinnati Bearcats exited the 2017 NCAA Div. I tournament in a 79-67 loss to the UCLA Bruins Sunday night in Sacramento.
Standout freshman guard Lonzo Ball paced UCLA with 18 points.
UC held a three-point halftime lead, but the second half was all UCLA. Bryce Alford, the son of Bruins head coach Steve Alford, added 16 points for UCLA.
Cumberland, a UC freshman guard and Wilmington High School graduate, was named American Athletic Conference basketball Co-Sixth Man of the Year earlier this month. He averaged 7.8 points and shot over 48 percent from the field during the regular season. On Jan. 29, Cumberland scored a career-best 26 points against South Florida.
Jarron is the son of Scott and Cheryl Cumberland, formerly of Hillsboro.
