Allowing two players each score 20 points, the McClain Lady Tigers were unable to fend off the Wilmington Lady Hurricane Wednesday night, losing in South Central Ohio League play by a 47-36 score at WHS.
The loss for the Lady Tigers sends them to a .500 overall record at 6-6 on the season. In SCOL play, the Lady Tigers fall to 4-4. As for the victors, the Lady 'Cane stand at 6-2 in the league and 7-3 overall.
During the opening quarter of the SCOL showdown between the two teams, Wilmington led after the eight-minute quarter at 14-10. After adding 17 points in the second, while holding MHS to six points, the host Lady ‘Cane team led 31-16 at halftime.
WHS outscored the Lady Tigers, 9-7 in the third, but in the fourth, McClain outscored Wilmington, 13-7.
McClain had seven players score points, with Beth Montgomery leading the way with nine points, including four two-point baskets and finishing 1-of-3 from the free-throw line. Taylor Polley followed with one 3-pointer, one two-point field goal and two free throws (2-of-4) for eight points.
Malea Montavon finished with seven points for the Lady Tigers, including three two-point field goals and going 1-of-1 from the free-throw line. Makenzie Montavon totaled four points, while both Lexie Barton and Liz Kegley each scored three points, with Barton sinking a 3-pointer and Kegley making three free throws. Rounding out the MHS scoring was Kelli Uhrig with two points.
The Lady Tigers finished 8-of-14 from the free-throw line (57 percent) with two 3-pointers and 11 two-point field goals. They also committed 11 fouls and 19 turnovers.
WHS finished 1-of-6 from the free-throw line (17 percent), while sinking four 3-pointers, 17 two-point baskets. The Lady 'Cane committed 12 fouls and 17 turnovers.
Leading WHS were Mya Jackson and Faith Sanderson with 20 points each. Jackson made 10 two-point baskets, and Sanderson totaled four 3-pointers and four two-point baskets.
Next for the Lady Tigers is a Saturday afternoon game (Jan. 14) at home against Chillicothe with a JV start at noon.
