Hillsboro sophomore Lane Cluff has qualified for the OHSAA Division II State Wrestling Tournament next week, as he finished as the Division II SE District Runner-up on Saturday at Wilmington High School.

Cluff wrestled at the 285 pound class, finishing the two-day district tournament at 3-1 overall, winning his first round, quarterfinal and semifinal matches.

In the first round, Cluff pinned Darius Miller of Mt. Healthy at the 2:44 mark. His second match came in the quarterfinals where Cluff pinned Sam Homan of Alter at the 2:10 mark of the match.

Next for Cluff in the semifinals, he won via decision at 6-4 by taking down Colin Wolffe of Miami Trace, securing his spot at the state tournament. In the championship match, Cluff lost to Trevor Hicks at the 43-second mark of the match.

The Division II State Wrestling Tournament begins on Thursday, March 9 at the Jerome Schottenstein Center in Columbus (on the campus of The Ohio State University) with Division II beginning at 4:10 p.m.

Also for the Indians, Dawson Carter (126), Deegan Boris (195) and Austin Miller (170) each finished the tournament at 2-2. Jared Conn (220) and Wyatt Wilkin (145) each went 1-2.

Carter lost his first-round match to Brayden Ploehs of Ross by a 4-2 decision. Carter came back with a pin fall win at the 1:30 mark over Cameron Chamberlin of Indian Lake. Carter won in the second consolation round by gaining a 1-0 decision against Ayyoub Muhammed of Thurgood Marshall. In the third consolation round, Carter lost for the second time, falling to Tanner Donathan of Western Brown at 9-5.

Boris at 195 pounds lost in the first round to Ryan Buckley of New Richmond by a tech. fall. In the first consolation match, Boris defeated Issac Craft of Urbana by a pin 47 seconds into the match.

Boris won his second consolation match, this time winning with a pin against Tom Coleman of Ross at the 4:01 mark. In the third consolation round, Boris lost to Jared Fenner of Miami Trace by a 3-0 decision.


Miller wrestled in the 170-pound class as he lost his first-round match to Hunter Hayden of Graham Local by a 9-3 decision. Miller won in the first consolation round by major decision over Carroll’s Noah Hoagland at 9-0.

Miller’s second win came against Avery Collins of Waynesville by pin at the 2:24 mark of the match in the second consolation. Miller lost in the third consolation match, falling to Preston Bressler of Talawanda by pin at 2:59.

Conn of HHS lost his first-round match to Johnny Shafer of Graham Local at the 1:18 mark. In his first consolation match, Conn won by pin over Jamen Hill of Carroll at the 2:45 mark of the match at 220 pounds. Conn lost in the second consolation to Wyatt Hillard of Franklin by by at 4:29 (OT).

Wilkin of Hillsboro lost his first round match to Joey Sanchez of Graham Local by pin at the 31-second mark of the match. Wilkin earned a district win in the first consolation math by defeating Jacob Kube of Goshen by a 7-6 decision. Wilkin lost in the second consolation round to Jake Steuerwald of Indian Hill by a 4-2 decision.

As for the McClain Tigers, they had three wrestlers qualify for the Division II District Tournament with Keegan Rawlins at 138 pounds finishing 2-2, Ethan Taylor (195 pounds) 1-2 and Quinton Smith (113 pounds) 0-2.

Rawlins won his first match of the two-day tournament in the first round by defeating Monroe’s Christian Leach via tech. fall at 15-0 in the 138-pound weight class. In the quarterfinal round, Rawlins lost to Caleb Blake (Tippecanoe) by a major decision at 10-1.

In the second consolation round, Rawlins bounced back with a win, defeating Dylan Murphy of Miami Trace by pin fall at the 22-second mark of the match. In the third consolation match, Rawlins lost to Derek Spears of Western Brown by an 11-6 decision.

Taylor began the 195-pound tournament with a first-round loss via pin fall to Tom Coleman of Ross at the 59-second mark but came back strong in the first consolation match by gaining a pin fall win of his own against Vicente Ocampo-Zepeda of Monroe at the 2:15 mark of the match. Taylor saw his tournament come to a close in the second consolation round, falling by pin fall to Ryan Buckley of New Richmond at the 3:22 mark of the match.

Smith in his two matches lost by tech. fall to Brandon Lucas of Western Brown and in the first consolation match lost to Abrum Barnhiser of Monroe by an 8-2 decision.

For the team results, the Hillsboro Indians tied for 14th overall with 41 points, and the McClain Tigers were 35th with 9.5 points. The district champion team was Graham Local with 321.5 points. There were a total of 49 schools in the two-day event.

Also from the South Central Ohio League, Miami Trace placed fourth (66 points), Clinton-Massie was ninth (53.5 points), Washington was 10th (51 points) and Wilmington was 20th (34 points).
