LEESBURG — Fairfield sophomore Kaiti White was on point at the plate and in the pitcher’s circle for the Fairfield Lady Lions Tuesday night, as her 14 strikeouts pitching and home run at the plate were enough to send the Lady Lions to an 8-3 win over rival Whiteoak.
The Southern Hills Athletic Conference victory by the Lady Lions saw them trail early to their Highland County foe with WHS having a 2-0 lead entering the bottom of the second inning.
That was as long as the Lady ‘Cats lead lasted, as the SHAC Division II-leading Lady Lions scored three runs in the half of the second, followed by another three-run inning in the third for a 6-2 advantage.
“We have a little higher standards than how we played today,” FHS head coach Mark Dettwiller said. “I’m just not happy with our defense today. We have a few things we have to work on.”
Whiteoak’s first run began with Jaycie Parr taking first on a error with one out. Later, with two outs in the top of the first inning, Parr scored on a double by Katie Ames.
In the second inning, M. Bartley reached the bases with a two-out single, and she scored on the ensuing at-bat when Courtney Gross doubled for the 2-0 lead.
The bottom of the second inning for FHS saw them have an RBI double from Lauren Arnold (2-for-4, four runs, one RBI) and a two-RBI single from Shania Setty (2-for-3, one run, four RBIs). Emily Williams (2-for-4, one run) scored on the double by Arnold, while Arnold and Lyndee Spargur (2-for-3, one run) scored on the hit from Setty.
In the third, Fairfield opened the inning with a single from Carli Reiber. She and White rounded the bases off a two-run home run by White with no outs. Next, Kourtnie Smith singled and scored on a fielder’s choice by Setty.
In the top of the fifth, the Lady 'Cats added one run, but that was answered in the bottom half of the fifth with a two-run inning by the host Lady Lions club.
“We didn’t hit bad (against Whiteoak), but we hit really well against Peebles on Monday night,” Dettwiller said. “It took us a little bit to get adjusted and hit the ball hard.”
Whiteoak’s third and final run scored when Chelsea Chisman reached first on an error, allowing Parr to take advantage of the errant throws to round the bases and take home.
Of the six WHS hits, they came from six different players, including Gross, Parr, Chisman, Alexis Jones, Ames and Bartley.
The two-run fifth consisted of Arnold leading off the inning with a single, and with one out, Setty singled in Arnold from second base, as she took that base earlier in the inning on a wild pitch. Setty later scored in the inning on a two-out double by Sherry Heckathorn.
For the game, the Lady Lions totaled 15 hits and three errors, leaving seven runners stranded on the bases. Whiteoak totaled six hits, had no errors and left eight base runners stranded.
White was the winning pitcher, as she allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits and no walks. In all, White totaled 14 strikeouts.
Those strikeouts came with three in the first inning, three in the third (she faced three batters) and two each in the fourth and fifth innings. White also had one strikeout in the sixth and two in the seventh inning. Of the 14 strikeouts, six were called third strikes, including two each in the fifth and seventh innings.
At the plate, White was 1-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored on the aforementioned home run in the third inning.
Gross was charged with the loss for the Lady 'Cats. She allowed eight runs on 12 hits and no walks. The WHS pitcher finished with five strikeouts.
