The FBI and Department of Justice are important to our country. While we must maintain oversight of these institutions, it has to be done in a bipartisan manner – not for partisan reasons or political gain.

The manner in which this (the release of the Trump/Nunes memo) was done was wrong and does a disservice to our country.

It is very serious when a foreign power engages in sophisticated efforts to impact not just our elections, but elections throughout the world.

Make no mistake, Russia is not an ally – they are not our friends – and they shouldn't be treated as such. The independent investigation into Russia’s meddling in our election must continue unimpeded by outside forces from either Congress or the president.

Here are some very respectable and patriotic Republican voices carrying the same message:

Republican Sen. John McCain: “The latest attacks on the FBI and Department of Justice serve no American interests – no party’s, no president’s, only Putin’s. The American people deserve to know all of the facts surrounding Russia’s ongoing efforts to subvert our democracy, which is why Special Counsel Mueller’s investigation must proceed unimpeded. Our nation’s elected officials, including the president, must stop looking at this investigation through the warped lens of politics and manufacturing partisan sideshows. If we continue to undermine our own rule of law, we are doing Putin’s job for him.”

Gen. Michael Hayden: "The 'release the memo' rallying cry on social media for a memo produced by Rep. Devin Nunes is the leading message now being pushed by Russian intelligence forces"

U.S. intelligence services say that one of the ways that Russian intelligence meddled in the election was by using “bot farms” to amplify social media claims that were helpful to Trump and harmful to his opponent, Democrat Hillary Clinton. Through that amplification, those stories would be listed as “trending” on such platforms as Twitter and YouTube, Hayden said.

“The most trending hashtag on Kremlin-controlled botnets as we speak is ‘release the memo,’” Hayden said.

Alberto Gonzales: “I have no confidence whatsoever in what’s going to come out of the House. Nunes seems to be part of the Trump team.”

These are some of our country's most honorable and knowledgable public servants and national security experts. When they speak, we would be wise to listen.
