Highland County Commissioners Jeff Duncan, Shane Wilkin and Terry Britton met with Keith Alcorn and Bev Jeffries of Highco at their Wednesday, April 19 board meeting.
Alcorn, the Highco chief executive officer, informed the commissioners of the need for additional space at Highco, particularly for its recycling and production services.
Highco, Inc is a non-profit organization based in Hillsboro that serves individuals in and around Highland County with developmental/intellectual disabilities, offering several services, including: vocational training, job development, summer youth programs and job coaching.
Alcorn noted that Highco has completed its CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) accreditation.
"We have received a three-year accreditation from CARF," he said.
Founded in 1966, the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities is an independent, nonprofit accreditor of health and human service.
"We're also looking for somewhere to expand our operation," Alcorn told commissioners.
"Recycling has basically stopped compared to what it used to be. We've got to find some space."
"The Highco recycling has been a great program," Britton said. "I hate to hear that it's dwindling. It's good for the county and for commercial businesses."
"Are you looking to get the recycling back online?" Wilkin asked.
"Yes, there are ways to make that happen," Alcorn said.
"Are you looking to go off-site?" Britton asked.
"Yes," Alcorn said. "We're amenable to any space for production, recycling, shredding and office space is needed. We'll have to find additional space."
Alcorn thanked the commissioners, Board of DD Superintendent Deb Buccilla and Roger Williams Auto Sales for its assistance in getting five vans for transportation.
